A Note:

6/2/13

I once told myself: IF I am accepted into grad school, this blog would no longer be updated. As it turns out, in April, I received news of my acceptance for the Fall 2013 semester, where I will attain a Master's degree of Science in Nutrition.

Running a blog, as many of you may already know, is a demanding side job once the excitement wears off. And once I fell out of the blogging community's loop (have you SEEN how many blogs there are now? Wow!), it was like the kiss of death. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't get into a blogging routine once this happened due to the disconnect I felt from the community.

So I took a break. I struggled with the loss and with missing my blog. And then I realized I didn't have to run Book Faery to still be a book reviewer; I could read my books and post reviews online. I'm still a book review blogger, just not in the traditional sense.

I'll still be online. You can chat with me on Twitter, where I'll be posting links to my reviews and talking books. I'll also be posting links to nutrition articles. And if you'd like to connect with me where I guarantee I will post reviews, just add me as a friend on Goodreads.

So that's all, folks! It's been a fun and amazing journey, and I thank you all for listening to my thoughts about books. I hope we all can keep in touch elsewhere :)

BOTS 2: Marta Acosta

by Marta Acosta

I love secondary characters and, over the course of my Casa Dracula series, several favorites reoccur: a partying heiress, a loony fake memoirist, a bagpipe-playing biker, a crafty tabloid writer... My heroine Milagro’s best friend from Fancy University (F.U.), Nancy Carrington-Chambers, was so much fun that I thought she deserved her own book: Nancy’s Theory of Style.

But my favorite secondary character is chic, snide, silver-haired Edna Grant. She’s not happy to have impulsive Milagro intrude in her family, and treats her like a fashion-challenged gold-digging nitwit.

“Edna, why do you always call me ‘young lady’ instead of using my name?”

“I call you ‘young lady’ in the hope that you will be motivated to act like a young lady someday.”

But the sarcastic nickname soon becomes an endearment as the two women grow close and Edna becomes the snarky, loving mother figure Milagro so desperately needs.

Edna feigns shock at Milagro’s antics, but her own youthful shenanigans scandalized the vampire community, especially when she wrote a sexy spoof of vampires and the vampire hunters who loved to hate them. Her ex-husband said that her household skills were limited to mixing Manhattans and setting out a bowl of Brazil nuts.

Edna’s since learned to cook – mostly red foods – but still enjoys happy hour every day. She remains a femme fatale, both intimidating and captivating men. When Milagro meets a gorgeous egomaniacal has-been actor, she assumes he’s hot for her. But 20-something Milagro isn’t his type. He sees Edna, is smitten, and in a cheezetastic moment declares, “I would cross oceans for you, my queen. I would slay dragons for you.”

Because you can be fabulous at any age.

Giveaway

Latina Ivy League grad Milagro de Los Santos can't find her place in the world or a man to go with it. Then one night, at a book party for her pretentious ex-boyfriend, she meets an oddly attractive man. After she is bitten while kissing him, she falls ill and is squirreled away to his family's estate to recover. Vampires don't exist in this day and age -- or do they? As Milagro falls for a fabulously inappropriate man, she finds herself caught between a family who has accepted her as one of their own and a shady organization that refuses to let the undead live and love in peace.

  9. -Hi, Qwill, I'm so glad you enjoyed that part of my book! I think one of my favorite scenes is when Milagro, dressed in her schlumpy natural fiber outfit and gloves, is sitting out by her dog's grave and Ian comes to talk to her. I miss Milagro!
-Tanya, I think Edna's dialog has always been the easiest for me to write. Maybe because I'm cranky and snide!
-Les, Amy, and Tore, good luck in the contest!
-Hi, Dot, so good to see you here! I'm glad you like my books even though they're not classic romance. I'm honored!
