A Note:

6/2/13

I once told myself: IF I am accepted into grad school, this blog would no longer be updated. As it turns out, in April, I received news of my acceptance for the Fall 2013 semester, where I will attain a Master's degree of Science in Nutrition.

Running a blog, as many of you may already know, is a demanding side job once the excitement wears off. And once I fell out of the blogging community's loop (have you SEEN how many blogs there are now? Wow!), it was like the kiss of death. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't get into a blogging routine once this happened due to the disconnect I felt from the community.

So I took a break. I struggled with the loss and with missing my blog. And then I realized I didn't have to run Book Faery to still be a book reviewer; I could read my books and post reviews online. I'm still a book review blogger, just not in the traditional sense.

I'll still be online. You can chat with me on Twitter, where I'll be posting links to my reviews and talking books. I'll also be posting links to nutrition articles. And if you'd like to connect with me where I guarantee I will post reviews, just add me as a friend on Goodreads.

So that's all, folks! It's been a fun and amazing journey, and I thank you all for listening to my thoughts about books. I hope we all can keep in touch elsewhere :)

By These Ten Bones by Clare B Dunkle (Plus Giveaway!)

Hey everyone!  Please give a warm welcome to Clare B Dunkle, who is stopping by Book Faery today to discuss her re-printed book BY THESE TEN BONES (which is now available to buy today!)

I'll be posting my review sometime later this week, so keep an eye out for my thoughts on this wonderful novel.

As you can see in the picture to the left, Clare is in fact the very same author who wrote the prequel to WUTHERING HEIGHTS--THE HOUSE OF DEAD MAIDS.

Could you please briefly describe BY THESE TEN BONES for those unfamiliar with this novel?

BY THESE TEN BONES is a werewolf story set in the medieval Scottish Highlands. A silent young woodcarver named Paul comes to Maddie’s little town, and Maddie finds herself falling in love with him. But Paul is keeping a terrible secret, and Maddie’s neighbors begin to die one by one.

Which three words would you use to describe Maddie, and why?

Warm-hearted, confident, and optimistic. Maddie is the sort who will take on any challenge to help a friend, and she firmly believes in happy endings.

If Maddie was a modern day girl, what sort of high school clique do you think she would fall into?

Maddie isn’t like the girl in the cover art. She’s an average-looking girl who doesn’t like being the center of attention. She definitely wouldn’t be a popular girl. I think she might laugh at them. She’s too soft-hearted to cause trouble, so I think she’d be the steady sort who gets all her homework done on time and gets asked to show new kids around school. You’d find her with the students who volunteer—the students who don’t think they are a clique, even though they wind up doing things together.

What is Maddie's favorite color?

Green. She loves growing things.

What is Maddie's favorite book?

Because she lives in a time when only a handful of gentlewomen are literate, Maddie can’t read and doesn’t have a favorite book. But she has a healthy dose of curiosity. I think she would like nonfiction books about people in other countries.

If there was one motto Maddie lived by, what would it be?

Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Which three words would you use to describe Paul, and why?

Lonely, tormented, and talented. Paul’s childhood was destroyed when a werewolf slaughtered his family. Woodcarving with his father’s tools is his only link to his happy past. He’s obsessive about carving, and he’s very good at it.

What wouldn't Paul ever be caught dead doing?

Falling in love—if he could help it. The only people Paul has ever loved died violently. He tries to keep away from everyone so that heartbreak can’t happen to him again.

What is Paul's favorite food?

Roast lamb.

What would Paul's favorite song be?

Paul loves the plaintive old Scottish ballads that tell a sad story. They’re beautiful songs, so they please his artistic temperament, and they also match his gloomy mood. We modern readers can get an idea of the songs Paul likes from this recording of Annachie Gordon. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gdjc8AIOPO8)

Wow, that song is haunting.  If Paul was a modern day teenage boy, what would be his favorite hobby?

He probably would still love his woodcarving, but I suspect that if he had our modern paints and paper, he would be a talented artist and painter as well. Paul wouldn’t be the sort who’s out on a football field every afternoon, laughing and yelling to his friends. I think he would still be quiet and introspective.

Thanks for the awesome opportunity to learn more about Paul and Maddie, Clare!  Remember everyone, BY THESE TEN BONES (buy it at: Amazon ~ B&N ~ Borders ~ Book Depot) is a reprint, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't still check this story out when you get the chance. :)  Happy re-release day, Clare!

But that's not it.  To celebrate Clare's release, we'll be having a week long giveaway on Book Faery!

  13. The way I spent my Valentine's is going to sounds a bit lame, but I went to the (this is the lame part)doctors and (the better part) did lunch with my mom, dad, and sisters. I also finished reading The face on the Milk Carton and read half of Something Rotten.

  22. Hello there! I loved this character interview, what a great idea, and great way to get a reader interested in the story!

For VD my fiance works second shift, so I was at home alone. Saturday was when we celebrated though. We went to see Tangled with my parents and took them out to a nice dinner at our favorite (and only) romantic eatery in town. It was amazing (and pricey!) We spent all weekend watching movies and just spending time lovin' each other. And...I finished Shadowfever by KMM.

For Valentintes day my husband and I put the kids in the basement, movie on, treats/popcorn in hand, and then let them do their thing while we had our own treats up in our room, watched movies, cuddled. It was actually great. I love kicking it back at home.
