A Note:

6/2/13

I once told myself: IF I am accepted into grad school, this blog would no longer be updated. As it turns out, in April, I received news of my acceptance for the Fall 2013 semester, where I will attain a Master's degree of Science in Nutrition.

Running a blog, as many of you may already know, is a demanding side job once the excitement wears off. And once I fell out of the blogging community's loop (have you SEEN how many blogs there are now? Wow!), it was like the kiss of death. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't get into a blogging routine once this happened due to the disconnect I felt from the community.

So I took a break. I struggled with the loss and with missing my blog. And then I realized I didn't have to run Book Faery to still be a book reviewer; I could read my books and post reviews online. I'm still a book review blogger, just not in the traditional sense.

I'll still be online. You can chat with me on Twitter, where I'll be posting links to my reviews and talking books. I'll also be posting links to nutrition articles. And if you'd like to connect with me where I guarantee I will post reviews, just add me as a friend on Goodreads.

So that's all, folks! It's been a fun and amazing journey, and I thank you all for listening to my thoughts about books. I hope we all can keep in touch elsewhere :)

BOTS 2: KT Grant

Favorite Secondary Characters

by KT Grant

Raise your hand if you have a favorite secondary character. I can bet 99.99999% of you will have a secondary character who sticks with you long after you finish reading as much as the primary ones. As a reader I have a few favorite secondary characters. Two of my recent favorites are Qhuinn and Blaylock a.k.a Qhuay from J.R. Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series. But instead of waxing on why these two are so wonderful, I decided to do something different and talk about one of my favorite secondary characters I’ve created.

Most know me as blogger Katiebabs, but I’m also a publisher author under the name KT Grant. When I’m in the process of writing a book, I know the value and importance of secondary characters. Last year, I published two books with Decadent Publishing. My first with them was For the Love of Mollie. The heroine Mollie, has a best friend Suzy, who is a secondary character. I then decided to give Suzy her own story called The Claiming of Suzy. Suzy was no longer secondary but now the primary and from that I went on to introduce even more secondary characters, one being her love interest, Xavier Marks.

Xavier has an interesting story himself. He almost overrides JC, the hero of The Claiming of Suzy. Even though Xavier was meant to be more of secondary status, I almost changed the dynamics of his relationship with Suzy, who became torn by which one of these men she wanted to end up with. Sometimes a secondary character can have such a strong personality, where they almost take over the story from the hero and heroine. Xavier is a perfect example of this.

I adore Xavier so much. He’s a smooth talking, debonair business man attracted to larger than life women. Suzy is what some may say is a bigger woman. Xavier is heads over heels lusting after Suzy not just because he finds her to be unbelievably sexy, but because of her sassy attitude.

Perhaps it also helped I envisioned Xavier as the actor, Blair Underwood:

I never really planned this to happen with Xavier, but when you’re in the moment writing a character in a certain way, they start to take over things where you feel like you have no control. And that was the case with Xavier. And I’m pleased to say that in October, Xavier will be the star of his own story called Xavier’s Loving Arms. If you were lucky to read about him in The Claiming of Suzy, you can only imagine what he’ll be like in his own book. Let’s just say Xavier has his mind set on seducing a woman who isn’t all that impressed with what he has to offer her. He has to work double time to get this special woman to even acknowledge him. The fun in reading is seeing Xavier romance his heroine in ways that I hope will make readers smile, as well as sigh from the romantic gestures Xavier does, including some hot sex scenes that put the “S” in steam (ice cream pops are involved at one point. How are they used? You’ll just have to read to find out) .

I would love for you to get to know Xavier before he makes his appearance in October. I have a copy of The Claiming of Suzy to give away to one lucky winner. For your chance to win, leave a comment here on a secondary character who surprised you and one that has stayed with you long after you’ve finished reading.

Synopsis: Xavier Marks has the looks, great job, and more than enough money to throw around. The only thing missing is a woman by his side. He hasn’t had much luck in love since he caught his fiancée cheating on him, and isn’t too happy about his current bachelor status. But that may all change when a cute barista from a coffee shop catches his eye. Perhaps she can help him lick his wounds?

Life hasn’t always been too kind to Rebecca Price. With a grandmother suffering from dementia, and the threat of foreclosure on her childhood home, she may have no choice but to turn to a possessive ex-boyfriend who won’t settle for anything less than marriage. She hides a shameful secret that still threatens to destroy her. She’s ready to give up all hope when a suave, yet seemingly kind-hearted man enters her life and comes to her rescue.

Rebecca is wary of placing her trust in Xavier, who wants to be more than a shoulder for her to lean on. But as the two grow close, Rebecca’s guilt over her past discretions continue to haunt her. Xavier wants to show Rebecca that the one place she can feel whole and at peace is in his loving arms.

  1. K.T., congrats on your release and your upcoming October release with Xavier (hope I spelled that right). Like you, secondary characters can take on a life of their own in a book and hold as much attention in my head as the hero/heroine do. They're fabulous! Love the secondary characters in all books and not just my own!

    Great blog, K.T.!
